Search Engine

A site which searches the web for sites which are relevant for a given search query.

Search Engine Optimization

The process of optimising a website or web page to increase its visibility within the search engine results, and hence improve rankings.
5.

Search Engine Submission

The process of submitting a website to Search Engines for listing and inclusion purposes.
6.

Search Term

The word or phrase entered by a user into a search engine to perform a search. Also known as a query.
7.

SEM

Search Engine Marketing. SEM encompasses SEO and search engine paid advertising options (banners, PPC, Paid Listings, etc.)

SEO

Search Engine Optimization. The process of optimising a website or web page to increase its visibility within the search engine results, and hence improve rankings.

SERP

A search engine results page.

Site Map

A hierarchical visual model of the pages of a Web site. Site maps help users navigate through a Web site that has more than one page by showing the user a diagram of the entire site's contents. They also help search engines in spidering and indexing the pages of the website.
11.

Sitematch

A Yahoo service that embeds paid links into the main index. This program runs alongside their free crawl service and offers websites the opportunity to get their pages indexed more quickly.

The Inktomi search crawler.

Spam

The act of excessively manipulating your website and web pages in order to gain search engine rankings. Some of the most popular spamming techniques include keyword stuffing, and using hidden text on web pages etc.
14.

Spamming

An attempt to feed misleading information to search engines in order to gain favourable positioning. Spamming techniques usually lead to the website to a ban on the search engines.
15.

Spider

A program that visits and downloads specific informaiton from a webpage. Also known as a Crawler.
16.

Spider Trap

A spider trap is anything that would prevent a spider from crawling your page or site. If a spider can't crawl through your site, the site won't get indexed.
17.

Splash Page

An introduction page that is used for branding purposes before the user reaches the home page.
18.

Sponsored Listings

Listings within search engine results pages which have been paid for by advertising sites. The best examples of Sponsored listings are Pay Per Click listings, offered by Google, Yahoo and Overture.
19.

Stop Word

Stop words are words that are ignored by search engines when indexing web pages and processing search queries. Also known as 'Filter Words'.
20.

Submission

The process of submitting a site to a search engine or directory.
