The world of SEO and Internet Marketing has gained considerable popularity in the last few years, and has its own language and dictionary of terms. We have compiled a list of some of the most used words in Search Engine Optimization and other Internet related terms to help you.

A search engine from Amazon.com.
2.

AdBrite

AdBrite is a marketplace for buying and selling advertising space on individual websites.

AdSense

A contextual advertising programme by Google.
4.

Adwords

A system to advertise on Google & partner sites on a CPC (cost per click) basis
5.

Affiliate

Someone who sets up a business that is in-between the original manufacturer and the end customer. Affiliates are not wholesalers, but store fronts or website owners wanting to earn revenue from their sites. Most often, affiliates do not handle product delivery or customer support.
6.

Agent Name

Synonymous with "User - Agent". This is the name of a spider or browser as defined by the owner.
7.

AJ

Ask Jeeves. Another search engine.
8.

Alexa

Alexa is an Amazon.com subsidiary which provides traffic statistics on the sites in its index.
9.

Algorithm

A series of mathematical formulae which are used in order to rank websites and web pages.
10.

Algorithmic Search

Search results that are shown on search engines due to relevancy to the search terms, not by sponsored placement. Also referred to as "organic", "natural" or "algorithmic" search.

Alt tag

The alternate text associated with a web page graphic that gets displayed when the Internet user hovers the mouse over the graphic. Alt tags should convey what the graphic is for or about and should contain good relevant keywords. Alt tags also make web pages more accessible to the disabled. For example, a vision-impaired user may have a web browser that reads aloud the text and alt tags on a page.

Alt text

The text that appears when you put your mouse on top of an image or a picture.

Altavista

One of the first large scale search engines.
14.

AltaVista

The first full-text Internet search service. They offer both paid and free inclusion services for submitting a website. AltaVista was purchased by Overture on April 28th 2003.

Anchor Text

The visible text for a hyperlink. Anchor texts are very important for Rankings and SEO.
16.

AOL

America Online. Another popular search engine.
17.

AOL Search

Search feature on America Online curently using Google search results and DMOZ for their directory.

API

Application Programming Interface.
19.

Automated submitting

Using automated softwares such as WebPosition Gold or an Application Service Provider (ASP) such as Microsoft b-central's Submit-It service to submit your web pages to the search engines. This tactic is frowned upon by the search engines. Indeed, some search engines such as AltaVista have completely automated submissions by requiring the user to re-key in a one-time use submission code that is displayed on the submission page as a graphic, also known as captcha.

Autoresponder

An email message which is sent automatically when an email is received to the email account address.
